Family Therapy in Santa Clara, CA
For when everyone cares, and no one feels heard.
Book a free 15-minute callFamily conflict rarely belongs to one person. One person gets louder, another shuts down, someone tries to keep the peace, and before long everyone is reacting to the pattern instead of talking about what they need.
Sometimes the strain follows a transition: a divorce, a move, a new baby, an illness, or a blended household finding its footing. Sometimes the family has been circling the same issue for years, and the old ways of handling it no longer work.
Family therapy gives you a place to slow that cycle down. The focus is not on choosing who is right. It is on understanding what happens between you and finding a more workable way forward together.

What families come in with
- Parent-teen conflict where every conversation seems to become an argument.
- Sibling tension that keeps pulling the whole household into the middle.
- A blended family trying to find roles, boundaries, and a way of belonging together.
- Divorce or co-parenting changes that have left everyone unsure of what comes next.
- Cultural and generational differences that make care and control hard to tell apart.
- A move, illness, loss, new baby, or other transition affecting the family as a whole.
- Trust that needs to be rebuilt after a conflict, betrayal, or long period of distance.
- Old family roles and patterns that keep repeating, even when everyone wants something different.
What to expect in family therapy
The first sessions are for understanding the family system: what has been happening, when things tend to escalate, who withdraws or steps in, and what each person hopes will change. You do not need to agree on one version of the problem before you begin.
Who attends can change depending on the work. Sometimes the whole family meets together. At other times, it may be more useful for parents, siblings, or one parent and child to meet as a smaller group. Your therapist will explain the reasoning and shape the process with you.
The work may include noticing the cycle beneath recurring conflict, practicing ways to communicate without blame, and building boundaries that fit your family’s actual structure, culture, and needs.
A family-systems approach
The question is not simply, “Who is causing the problem?” It is, “What keeps happening between us?”
Our therapists draw from Family Systems Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and attachment-based approaches. These methods look at relationships, roles, alliances, and repeated patterns rather than treating one family member as the sole problem.
Treatment is adapted to the people in the room. The goal is to help family members understand one another more clearly and respond differently when the familiar cycle begins.
Care that understands family and culture
Satva Therapy works with two-parent, single-parent, blended, and multigenerational families. We also have experience with South Asian, Indian, and Indian-American families navigating immigration, cultural identity, in-law relationships, and differences between generations.
Sessions are available in English, Hindi, and Telugu, in person at our Santa Clara office and online across California. During a consultation, we will learn what is bringing your family in and help match you with a therapist on our team.
Before you reach out
Who should attend family therapy sessions?
It depends on what your family is working on. Sometimes the whole family attends together. Other sessions may include parents only, one parent and one child, or siblings together. Your therapist will help decide which configuration is most useful as the work develops.
Do you work with teens?
Yes. Our therapists frequently work with teens in the context of family therapy, including parent-teen conflict, communication, changing expectations, and questions of identity or independence.
Can family therapy begin if one person is not willing?
Full participation can be helpful, but it is not always possible at the beginning. A therapist can often start with the family members who are ready and talk with you about what may be useful from there.
How long does family therapy take?
The timeline depends on what brought your family in, how long the pattern has been present, and what you want to change. Your therapist can give you a more useful estimate after learning about your family and meeting for the first few sessions.
Can we meet online?
Yes. Family therapy is available by telehealth anywhere in California and in person at our Santa Clara office. We can talk through which format is likely to work best for your family.
